download flyerWomen in the Outdoors includes six outdoors classes, demonstrations, one-year subscription to Women in the Outdoors magazine, light breakfast, lunch, and one year membership to National Wild Turkey Federation. Classes include: Shelter and Fire Making; Surviving Wild Animals; Food and Water Gathering; Surviving Daily Life; Self-Help First Aid; Outfitting For Survival. Demonstrations include: Blacksmithing and Flint Knapping.

Women in the Outdoors is dedicated to providing educational outdoor opportunities for women ages 14 and older. Experts and trained professionals teach outdoor skills in a noncompetitive environment. Outdoor learning events featuring hands-on activities are conducted by local chapters throught the nation.

A partnership project of the Zane Trace Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation and the Ohio Division of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife.

On October 20 we will make creations from clay. On November 4 we will share the experience of the ancient tradition of pit firing pottery. Bring food to share and dress to be outdoors. There will be time for talking and music.

Kosia Oshiro specializes in pit-firing pottery, an old way of firing done in the style of the Ohio Shawnee, using the native clays of the area. She is a member of the United Remnant Band of Shawnee of Ohio, and has produced a number of modern day firings of Shawnee pottery on land owned by the Shawnee up near Zane’s Caverns.

The Sexual Assault Prevention Program is dedicated to educating communities in Athens, Hocking, and Vinton Counties about sexual assault and sexual prevention. The program provides educational workshops for middle school, high school, and college students. The program also educates community members about sexual assault, how to spot and stop sexual assault within the community, and where to go for help.

Athens Community Food Initiatives, a local non-profit, will host a potluck and workshop by Rebecca Wood on permaculture. Please bring a dish to pass and place settings. Drinks will be provided.

Rebecca Wood has been an instructor at Hocking College in the Natural Resource program for the last 17 years. In addition to teaching core field botany and ecology classes she has also developed and instructed their courses in Sustainable Development, Conservation Management, and is working on new courses in Ethnobotany, Restoration Ecology, and Permaculture. She has also integrated her passion of the natural world and her love of herbs into Hopewood Center for Wellness and Herbal Studies where she provides experiences in Understanding Nature, Growing and Using Medicinal Plants, Wild Food Fun, and Healing with Nature. These classes are represented in the Herbal Studies certificate program and Complimentary Wellness courses offered at Hocking. United Plant Savers

Nine-week program, plus one-day silent retreat (date TBA). Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a way of mindfully working with your own stress, pain, illness, and the challenges and demands of everyday life.

Bonnie Edwards, MBSR instructor and professional counselor, will guide participants through mindfulness meditation and movement practices. Participants will receive individualized instruction, exercises to enhance awareness in everyday life, and daily assignments with mindfulness CDs and handouts.

Registration: begins after orientation session on 9/25. Minimum of 10 registrants required. Do not need to be WellWorks member.

5th Annual Diversity Conference

The Diversity Conference focuses on four main workshops: political ideology, religion, racial identity, and sexuality. Each workshop allows for the participants to learn and to discuss the topic by having interactive games, debates and showing video clips. All participants are allowed to attend all four of the workshops. Sponsored by Unify.

Unify is an Ohio University student organization that consists of diverse students committed to helping increase diversity and understanding at Ohio University. Unify provides opportunities for formal information sharing and collaboration among representatives from different campus organizations dealing with diversity issues. Members work to promote the Diversify Your World campaign, plan an annual diversity conference, discuss important topics, and unify various diversity initiatives.
