Dr. Sharon Denham, a professor in OU’s School of Nursing, will facilitate conversations based on her ‘Quietly Radical Life.’ Conversations may include: Being ‘IN’ while living in urban and suburban places yet coming ‘OUT’ while living is a rural place, Where are all the lesbian nurses?, Being out in the classroom, Health and cultural concerns of Appalachian folks, Getting more bold and ‘out’ there, An openly gay grandson, and more. Come join in on the conversation!

Dr. Denham started her nursing education as a non-traditional student in an associate degree nursing program at Shawnee State University, Portsmouth, Ohio. She has also completed a baccalaureate degree at Ohio University, a Master’s of Science in Nursing from Bellarmine College, and a doctoral degree in nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Her areas of focus have been nursing education, family nursing, and community health. She has given numerous local, state, national, and international professional presentations. She is active professionally in several professional nursing organizations and currently serves as a Commissioner for the National League of Nursing Accreditation Commission, chairs the Family Health Section of the National Council on Family Relations, and is involved for many years with the Appalachian Studies Association.

Dr. Denham has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals pertaining to her research and has written a textbook entitled Family Health: A Framework for Nursing, a framework to consider family-focused care. She is widely recognized for her knowledge about and work with health and cultural concerns of Appalachian populations. Her current research and scholarship focus on type 2 diabetes, but over the years she has published research findings about family health, abuse and violence, alcohol and tobacco use in Appalachian populations.

This year-long OU LGBT Center series is designed to specifically focus on the lives, loves and interests of Lesbians! Offered twice a quarter, this series will include discussions, activities, slide shows, etc. All are welcome!
