ATHENS, Ohio (March 5, 2007) — The Ohio University School of Dance will host the East Central Regional American College Dance Conference, March 16 to 19. The event will feature six dance performances that are free and open to the public.

More than 450 students and faculty members from various universities and colleges in the region and Canada will participate in classes at the conference and present choreography in performance for adjudication.

“This event will showcase the excellent and diverse dance programs offered by colleges and universities in the region,” said Madeleine Scott, director of the Ohio University School of Dance. “Students will participate in classes that include tap, jazz, ballet, modern,
African, and Korean dance forms as well as other forms of movement study such as yoga, Pilates, Bartenieff Fundamentals and Capoeria, to name a few. This event will be very inclusive.”

Five formal concerts and one informal concert are scheduled. An informal concert will be presented at the Baker University Center Theater beginning at 12:30 p.m.

The formal performances will take place at Templeton-Blackburn Memorial Auditorium beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 16; 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 17; 6:30 p.m., Sunday, March 18 and 7 p.m., Monday, March 19. The Monday performance is a Gala Concert that will feature dances specifically selected by the conference
adjudicators.

The conference will feature experienced adjudicators from diverse dance backgrounds. They include JoAnna Mendl Shaw from the Julliard and Alvin Ailey School, Kevin Wynn from SUNY Purchase, and Cornelius Carter from the University of Alabama. An essential feature of the conference is the constructive feedback that adjudicators provide to representatives of each school after their performances. The feedback sessions are open to the public and follow immediately after the formal concert performances.

“We are very pleased that four Ohio University alumni from our dance program will be among the institutions attending the conference. They will bring students from their respective universities who will perform and they will teach classes while here.”

Among the dances presented on the festival concerts will be choreographies by Ohio University Associate Professor Travis Gatling, and senior dance majors Haley Dulman and Sarah McCoy.
