Ohio University, Athens

HOSTAGE OF TIME is a film from Lebanon directed by Jean Khalil Chamoun (1994, 50 min).
“In HOSTAGE OF TIME, we meet Laila, a young doctor who returns to her village in Southern Lebanon shortly after the 1993 Israeli attack. This episode razed 50 villages and made half-a-million civilians homeless, causing a refugee flood into Beirut. Through Laila’s relationship with her family and the women and children of the surrounding villages, we discover the hopes and dreams of the people of Southern Lebanon and their courageous efforts to rebuild their lives.” (http://www.arabfilm.com/item/75/)
All films are free and open to the public.

~ LEBANON RELIEF ~ The Global Relief Organization, the group which organized the Kashmir Relief last year, is starting off the new school year by raising money for Lebanon. We are working through an reputable relief group called SAMIDOUN to get aid to those in need in Lebanon (samidoun.org). To begin raising public awareness we will be showing films relating to the violence in the Middle East, especially concerning Israeli, Palestinian and Lebanese conflicts. We will be holding discussions after each film about the topics addressed, and hope to build on each film throughout the course of the events. All films will be shown in Walter Hall in room 235. (Walter Hall is the new round building at the bottom of Richland Ave. across from the football stadium and the Convocation Center.)

WEEK 3: Wed Oct 11 & Thu Oct 12
FILM 5: On the 11th we will show ‘Under the Rubble’. This is a documentary that looks at Lebanon and the story behind the 1982 Israeli invasion seen from Beirut. It is from 1983, and may provide an eerie mirror on events of the last few months. It was directed by a husband and wife team from Lebanon and Palestine.

FILM 6: Our final film will be ‘Hostage of Time’ on the 12th. This is a documentary that looks at Lebanon after the 1993 invasion by Israel and follows a doctor back to her home in Southern Lebanon after the refugee crises then (500,000 refugees from the South then). This may be an even eerier mirror to the recent events, and provides a ten year later view of Lebanon.
